Before I read your message I was certain the answer was a bad fuse. But you say the light on the charger illuminates, obviously the fuse is good. Another common problem is that the male charger plug doesn't seat fully into the power receptacle; but again, your light is on so the power must be flowing to the charger.
That leaves me with one thought only. Are you trying to charge your phone with the car "OFF"? Our 9-5's don't allow this. When the car is "OFF", all electricity stops flowing to the power outlets. Many other cars don't do this and will continue to charge cell phones when the engine is "OFF".
If this is not the case, then I would lay blame on either a broken wire in the cord from the car charger to your phone, or a bad battery in your phone that will no longer accept a charge.
