If you don't like using the wipers you need to apply one of the better rain repellents. Most are proprietary to the airplane cockpit window suppliers (GKN, Sierracin, Etc.). The exception is PPG Aquapel which if I have been advised correctly is identical to their proprietary aircraft product (Surface Seal). You can find Aquapel on Ebay. Aquapel (and the previous version, STP Vision Blade) last a year in Seattle if properly applied and maintained. Mine is still working fine after 4 years, three of which were spent around LA so it didn't get all that much of a work out. Now that I'm back in Seattle, I'll have to reapply next fall.

Proper application: Apply to a clean window. I mean really clean. This doesn't mean soap or windex. What you need to do is get a glass polish (not cleaner) from your local auto supply and apply per the manufacturer's instructions until the window is water-break-free. This means that when water sprayed on the window, it quickly forms into a continuous thin sheet that gradually creeps down the window. Then apply the rain repellent per the manufacturer's instructions.

Proper maintenance: No brushes or scratch pads to remove bugs, ect. Most commercial window cleaners, detergents or car wash compounds are ok. For that matter so is Coka-Cola (Coke has been tested by PPG for it's affect on Surface Seal because some airline mechanics have been know to use it to clean windows).

Brooks - who knows more about glass and airplane windows than he wants to know and has seen many a chicken hit cockpit windows and fighter canopies as speeds from 350 to 550 knots.
