Fuel pump incorrectly detects fuel level

In my post "Gas gauge or fuel pump issue" (Posted by AlexS on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 22:37:34) I described a problem encountered after replacing a dead fuel pump in my '99 9-5 (~115K). The problem is that the fuel gauge does not indicate "Full" when the tank is full. Possible issues pointed out in SWEDECAR's response have also been checked out.
My mechanic has heard that the floating element in the pump assembly (which detects fuel level in the tank) had to be trimmed in some way in '99 models because there was not enough clearance between it and the tank itself. (Unfortunately by the time we discovered the problem the old pump had been thrown away.) This design issue was later addressed by Saab by changing the design of the gas tank.
Question: Has anyone heard of this trimming procedure? How is it done? (Saab service bulletins apparently do not cover this.)
Thank you, -Alex
