My copy of the CR "Best and Worst Cars" for '08 gives mostly decent used car ratings for the 9-5 going back to '99. The '02 gets a poor rating due to major engine, engine cooling, electrical and climate system problems. The CR charts indicate the best used 9-5 bets are '03 and after.
CR basically damns with faint praise the 9-5 as a new car choice in the text, but then awards it the red Recommended check. Shows it's age, seems to be the operative phrase. (Well, there isn't a whole lot of visual differentiation between the '99 and the '08, if the neighbors' opinions are important to you.)
The 9-3 fares somewhat worse at the hands of CR's reviewers, particularly as a used car choice, but also gets the Recommended rating as a new car.
In my book, the ratings combined with Saab's infamous depreciation make the 9-5 a best bet for the value consumer eyeing late model off-lease vehicles.
My '99 with 126K on the odometer is still an effortless cruiser with nary a rattle or squeak, even on New England side roads in early Spring.
Sidebar: I came out of one of the local shopping malls to find an '08 Cad CTS parked beside my 9-5. They're almost the same size. The Cad's interior is a bit over the top for my taste, but I suspect most buyers would find the interior of my 9-5 decidedly, um, understated. I'd hate to be a Saab salesman these days in a GM showroom that offered 9-5s competing with the CTS. And I think the stickers are in the same ball park.
