Chris
I was in the hunt for the S60 last summer as well.. and was pretty much all set to purchase.. Volvo did a nice job with the exterior and engineering of the s60. Its weight distribution is as well balanced as any fwd car out there, and the car is much tighter than previous volvos. My issue had to do with the fact that you couldn't get a base s60 with 5 spd manual along with a sunroof and premium stereo in the U.S., and that killed the deal for me. I found the base S60 with auto tranny to be sluggish, so be sure to give it a good test drive. However; if you like the auto, then you can step up to their next model, which has sufficient power and you can option it out pretty much however you want...
I ended up purchasing the 9-5 2.3lpt with 5 spd manual. The 9-5 definitely has the advantage with front shoulder room, and rear leg and headroom. Also the 9-5 seems to be more of a driver's car, in terms of performance and road feel.. The volvo handled nicely, but somehow felt a little sterile to me...
Good luck with your decision.. in my opinion both both cars are great, it's just a matter of what your needs are..
