Your afraid of all kinds of performance characteristics that old Saab automatics used to have. The modern Aisin Warner auto is fabulous. Even the pre 2002 4 speed is a great tranny. Saab has actually "figure(d) out how to allow the motor to work...
More Saab history bites the dust. Used to be if you had an automatic 900 or 9000 it wasn't "if" it was "when" for tranny replacement. Now the Aisin Warner is truly bulletproof. Probably less problems overall than the manual/clutch combo as in 200k, with towing thrown in, you could likely go through several clutches.
No gear hunting, no durability issues, now about those useless paddles on the 03 and up, they're toys. A better system is the slap shifter in the 9-3SS, but you don't get the "sport" mode button in the 9-3SS, which is what you'll drive in 100% of the time in a 9-5. Yes you can shift manually with the paddles, but you won't find a need the transmission does such a good job on it's own in sport mode.
Try one. Don't let Saab history or your old paradigms get in the way.
