When I bought my 2002 Arc last month, I immediately sent it to my local Saab mechanic (Swedish Car in Bound Brook, NJ), for replacement of the timing belt, tensioner, pulleys and water pump. They also detected at that time a leaking thermostat cover, AND a leaking oil cooler cover. So, they changed out both.
The oil cooler cover was something I wasn't familiar with, so I looked it up in WIS. Basically, in the valley between the cylinder banks is a large space. Coolant flows through that area, and the oil cooler sits in there, under a cover. The cover has holes through which the oil lines pass. It was the COVER that was leaking. The car only generated a slight whiff of coolant, no visible leaks (under the car, anyway), and only if the hood was opened while the motor was running, or just after being shut off.
That's one possibility, in addition to the aforementioned coolant bypass.
