Running out of gas is always a bad idea. I try to never go below 1/2 tank to assure proper submergence and cooling for the fuel pump. Running completely dry will obviously stall your engine. I agree with zef, your fuel pump may be shot and your filter or pickup screen completely clogged. Also, if you don't run fuel injector cleaner and water remover regularly (like Techron concentrate), there is a chance of water accumulation in the gas tank that can be sucked in when you let it run all the way down, and this can cause some engine trouble. Also, sputtering before the car stalls due to irregtular fuel delivery and ignition can possibly lead to cat damage...

Bottom line is: never let it run out of gas again! There must be a gas station withing 300 miles distance (low end range on full tank). Fill it up, try to start it, and if you manage, listen to any weird noises and look out for CEL. Hopefully (fingers crossed) nothing went wrong but so many things could have.

Btw, that orange light saying "low fuel" is not just annoyance. It is there to help prevent any damage due to running out of gas. My friend has an Audi A6, and you can't run out in that car. The computer will light the little fill-up icon and warn you twice on display to add gas. If you ignore it, third time it will shut off the engine and you won't be able to start it unless dealer removes the lock on the ECU and fills up the gas.
