Re: How do you test oxygen sensors? Posted by Larry West [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: How do you test oxygen sensors?, Don ![]() |
First, is that code specifically an Oxygen sensor code (I don't have WIS handy)? If it is, the sensor is most likely bad.
Anyway, Oxygen sensors output a voltage between zero and 3 or 5 volts, typically. On old CIS injection systems in the 99 & Classic 900, the "test" was to check the lambda valve's duty cycle when the oxygen sensor lead (the car side, not the lead from the sensor) was connected to the positive contact on a "D" cell battery, with the negative contact of the battery touching ground (on the car chassis). This simulated a "good" mixture, and the duty cycle of the valve would return to where it should be.
Can this be adapted to a 9-5? Possibly, though I have never tried. You could possibly put the battery in the circuit (which I'm sure won't be easy), and see if the code does not come back.
Good luck!
