Tried one of those FRAM thingies on my 9000... Posted by Larry West [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: oil drain valve = 8 minute oil / filter change, schpank, Tue, 25 Mar 2008 00:40:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
...and I took it off after one oil change...
FRAM's was a tad different. You used this brass thing to replace your drain plug, and there was a valve inside it (MUCH better than any flip valve, IMO). You had a cap for it when you weren't driving, and a fitting with a device that opened the valve, and had an orange (go figure...) tube coming off of it.
My main issue was the fact that it took forever to drain, because the fitting and valve restricted the flow. Also, the tube never pointed where I needed it to (i.e. into the drain pan)., and it was actually MORE of a pain than just removing the plug.
Also, on the 9000, it may have prevented the past ounces of oil from getting out, as that fitting had to stick up higher than the bottom of the pan (on the 9k, the plug goes in more or less horizontally).
For doing drain plugs, the best weapons to use are:
1) long 1/2" drive breaker bar with appropriate size SIX-POINT (not 12!) socket FOR REMOVAL ONLY! Apply even steady pressure to get the plug loose and off and remove when the car (and oil) is warm
2) standard 3/8 drive ratchet also with appropriate six-point socket to put the plug back in. Hand tight. If you're not sure of your own strength, get a torque wrench.
This technique was honed on Classic 900s where the oil pan is also your transmission case, so getting it right is very important and getting it wrong...
