Bought the GM V-6 timing tool from OTC for $195 S & H included. Why? Nearest stealership or indie is 220 miles away. Took 3 months on backorder, so Iput in the junkyard engine with original belt and drove 8k miles. (bought non running 9-5 blowing all sorts of smoke, imagine that, #4 valve completely shot and #4 piston slap, at least it had a brand spankin' new turbo because of stealership miss diagnosis source of white smoke, the poor previous owner paid $3k to replace turbo and that wasn't the problem) So 100k on frame, 56k on junkyard motor now. Great car (damned 95 mph ticket in middle of desert) after SID repair, code 8 repair on blend door, 12 quarts of ATF flush later, new pads, tires, hoses. belts, etc.
The hardest part was adjusting the tensioner to within specs, timing the sprockets was pretty easy, just a note though, while the instructions say CCW on the pulleys to advance timing marks and CW to reverse if advanced too far, rotating CW won't drive the sprockets backwards like rotating CCW will advance the belt, but backing off CW will cause the timing marks to adjust back towards the mark on the tool, but you'll have to readjust the tensioner and then rotate engine 2 revs to see if it all lines up, sounds complicated but isn't, if I've completely confused you, follow the WIS (which I did, it's just there appears to be some finesse that isn't conveyed in the WIS) and what Anders advice might be.
Was it worth it? Not if I had a Saab indie closer then 220 miles. But it was oddly fun and gratifying. If i decide to sell tool, I'll let Saabnet know before Ebay, please no post wondering about availability, rent, price etc.
