If you are planning to add a Bluetooth/Handsfree unit, you change the cable connector behind he dash in all cases. What you would do is disconnect the OnStar cable from the TEL1 connection behind the ACC unit, and connect the harness to your Bluetooth unit to the TEL1 connector.
(The TEL1 connector is there to connect through to the audio system the audio from the handsfree unit, and to tell the radio when to mute and switch over to the phone. It is there on all cars with ONStar, and most (prior to 2006) without. There is also a built-in microphone you can use next to the rear view mirror.)
At that point, you can remove the OnStar equipment. Unless you like tearing your car apart, I'd leave the OnStar wiring where it is.
And if you have a wagon, you get your little floor cubby back!
