Once you get more used to the way the car drives and accelerates you will notice differences between which grades of gas you use. I know I sure can tell. When I first got my 2001 V6 I used 87 octane. It ran fine but I did notice that on hills and stuff the engine would down shift and sound very loud and growly/coarse trying to get up that hill. Using a higher octane I find that the car does not down shift (unless you hit the gas enough of course) on hills. It will stay in fourth around 1500rpm and you'll see the boost gauge take off. I run 89 in mine, and might switch to 91 over the summer. I do not notice any differences in mileage between the two octanes though. Going from a higher octane to a lower octane the engine management will notice almost right away and you'll feel a decrease in power. Going from lower to higher on the other hand takes a bit longer for the engine to recognize. The fastest way to get it to see the higher octane is to find a hill that you can mash the gas pedal to the floor on. Let it run through 2nd, and as much of 3rd as you can (in Sport mode of course). Then you should find some extra power connected to your right foot. Congrats on your new car! Enjoy!
