Herb is right of course. In my previous post I was neglectful of what *really* needs to be done. And isn't really expensive if you DIY a little or use an indy.

You do need to do all these, especially on a nice European car like a Saab. I do most of it myself, so a car I like is rarely in the clutches of a dealer. The 60K service cost me $230 at the dealer (to keep the CPO warranty going), as the belt and pulleys were OK, but I had done a bunch of it myself.

However, many people do ignore the regular items and go on the "pay as it breaks" plan. Does it really cost more over time? I don't know, since it depends on what breaks. And it depends on the car. You can ignore a lot of stuff on some cars, but doing so on a Euro car is a losing proposition.

What regular maintenance helps avoid is most breakdowns. An old air filter or passenger compartment filter won't strand you, but old hoses can. And an old fuel filter can cause problems. A broken serpentine belt will leave you stranded and could potentially cause an accident. Unchanged oil can kill an engine.

If someone doesn't like the cost of dealer service, go find an indy who knows Saabs. My indy is $25/hour cheaper than the dealer, always gives me straight info, and I never question what he tells me. The dealer, well, let's just say he's been known to be careless with the truth.
