I just completed the installation of new cylinder head bolts on my 2001 LPT wagon. The vehicle presently has ~131,000 miles.

Removal of the valve cover was easy enough, as 12 of the 16 bolts were loose and could be removed by hand. I used a rubber mallet to tap the valve cover loose.

The area around the spark plugs was "damp" with oil...the first time I remember seeing any oil in there....so indeed it was time to do this job.

No sludge...just varnish staining was visible.

Removing the existing head bolts was easy; I checked each bolt with my torque wrench set at 45 lb./ft.....and bolt # 2 in the sequence was the only one that "snugged up"....Removal one bolt, install replacement, torque to 44 lb/ft, then on the the next, until all 10 were replaced.

Then, starting at #1, applied a 90 degree turn to each bolt.

Installing the valve cover gasket was made very easy by using some (sparingly) Loctite 518 gasket maker/sealant that I had on my toolbench. (I cleaned off oil residue with brake cleaner.)

Torqued the 16 bolts to 11 lb/ft. per the WIS sequence. Reinstalled the IDM with blue loctite on the screws.

Started the car, and vroooom.....let it idle for about 5 minutes, and then off for a 12 mile test loop.

This car runs great....
