After a recent oil change at the dealership, I was informed that I had a seeping oil cooler, which would cost approximately $1200 to repair. This was quite a surprise since I did not notice any leaking coolant or leaking oil. Moreover, there was no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant, as far as I could tell.

I monitored the situation, and did the next oil change myself. Again, I did not notice any leaks, and have observed no oil in coolant and no coolant in the oil. I guess I have two questions at this stage: (1) how could the dealer have diagnosed this problem while doing an oil change (I'm quite certain he did not take anything apart since the entire service took about 15-20 minutes) and (2) how do I know (apart form seeing oil in coolant/coolant in oil) that I have an oil cooler problem?

I hate to perform a repair (and spend the money) that may not be necessary. At the same time, I don't want to risk doing any damage to the engine. Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome.
