0w-30 or 40 is shown in the 2001 manual as OK - ONLY IF it is ACEA A3/B3 rated.
personal opinion warning:
I'd be uncomfortable using most 30s in a hot climate or in heavy use towing etc. There are 30s that have hot viscosity towards the high end of what's allowable for a 30 weight oil - like German Castrol 0w-30 or Esso XD-3 synthetic - and those should be OK.
FWIW I've been using those 0w-30s for 6 years with no difficulty - just changing to 0w-40 on the next change since I have another (non-Saab, hot running, air cooled) car that will work better with 40, and it's nice to just stock one oil at home.
