You can move toward the Aero with a larger diameter wheel and tire package, for example from tire rack. The 16" x 6.5" stock wheels and 215 R55 tires on my 04 9-5 Arc were very cushy and insecure in the twisties, and 17" x 7.5 alloys with 225 R45 Z rated tires really firmed up the control over the car in all conditions. Painting the wheels gets you nothing, sorry.
The above mods still left the Arc well short of the handling on our 01 9-5 Aero, but substantial progress was made.
