When the starter motor reaches a predetermined speed, the starter clutch disengages from the flywheel. As to the clunk, I have the same car you do, and no its very smooth starting and stopping the engine. I only feel a very small veberberation for a split second through the car as it starts. With that much mileage its most likely the motor mounts. I'm a motor mount freak and replace them even when they're not all that bad. All of mine have been replaced and it makes the car feel and sound very different. Much more luxury like. I suggest starting with the hydraulic mount on the right hand side of the engine, closest to the top. This made the biggest difference in sound for me. Then tackle the transmission mount under the battery, followed by the triangular hydraulic mount at the back of the engine. If you need more advice, let me know!
