I asked that same question and it was explained to me that yes, the engine doesn't take all of the strain, but it supposedly takes more of a strain than if you have the engine and transmission operating as designed in what would be considered a more optimal and efficient range. Some Mercedes and Porsche models of the past with automatics and/or Tiptronics started off in 2nd gear in very slow traffic. However, if the transmission sensor picked up a signal that the accelerator was pushed down to the degree that the driver was looking for a quick getaway, the transmission would downshift to first gear. The setup on the Boxster caused the downshift to be almost instantaneous and imperceptible. And if you were at a standstill and hit the throttle, it automatically defaulted to first gear.
