Sounds like the turbo or possibly valve guides, which would be indicated if it smokes when going down a hill on compression (foot of the gas), then stepping on the gas. It is likely not rings if it also smokes after a warm start as you mention. Keep in mind that at 150K everything has some wear.
I would try 10W-40 but it won't help much - you likely have some repairs ahead, although not that major. I would not wait until it fails completely as other damage may be caused. I believe a leak-down test would eliminate the rings and valve guides and isolate the problem to the turbo. Good luck.
