Most likely the problem is solved except the white smoke which is not related to fuel pump.
What it could be is just regular condensation water being burned and you just now noticed it due to the problem you were having, looking extra carefully at the car when starting.
Take it for a habit for awhile to check the tail pipe on the car in front of you and a stop sign and you will notice many cars where water is more or less pouring out of the tail pipe when they take off.
That's how much condense water is accumulated in exhaust system every day.
