The VERY early DI Cassettes from the 80s & 90s (identified by being red, and having a cable permanently attached to it that plugged into the 9000 with two connections) had replaceable coils (not diodes...). These were oil filled, wiht a translucent body, and you could see the oil inside them. You could not "top up" the oil, but over time, these coils would leak, and stop working.
But, I think they underestimated the failure rate on the coils, and changed the design early on, before the NG900 was out, much less the 9-5.
I've stored them in all orientations, and it doesn't really seem to matter. I am not even sure there is any oil in them any longer. Hmm...I'll have to bandsaw one apart. Anyone got a failed DI around?
