My experience with the Saturn SL line from 1993-2000 was exactly the same. The mounts hadn't failed actually to where there was clunking and thunking, but they had degraded and replacing the upper torque axis mount literally transformed the car, smoothed up the rough edges.
The Saab service advisers and techs don't seem to think that's the case with a 9-5.
