Both key remotes not working

2001 9-5 Aero.
Just recently, my key remote stopped working. I just assumed that the battery had died and thought, "I'll get to it one of these days..."
I checked with my wife's key remote this past week and it doesn't work either.
Is it the case where both batteries died roughly in the same time frame and can there be other causes? What else can I check (and hopefully fix myself) before bringing it to the dealers.
If it's electronics, I don't feel too confident that the independents can fix this so I make have to go to the local dealer and face the consequences ($$$).
