9-5 Sliding Front Armrests, why?

Please don't misunderstand me, I absolutely love my 2006 9-5 that I have had for ~ 2 months. It is a phenomenal machine! That being said, I haven't found that having the front seat armrest function of being able to slide forwards and backwards a positive asset.
Maybe I've got too heavy of a foot on the accelerator, and will wear down the brake pads more quickly than the average 9-5 owner, but I don't particularly care for the armrest sliding forwards / backwards. Would like the ability to lock it in place, and unlock it if desired so it would allow it to slide if the owner so chooses. Am I missing the point?
Have been curious and just had to ask the question. Thanks for your patience!
