Crayon smell is just part of the car.. Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: New (old) SAAB owner.., Bob, Mon, 2 Jun 2008 21:00:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The only logical item we (collective 9-5 owners) can associate this smell with is the leather treatment on the interior.
The chain noise from the engine may be the timing chain. There is a tensioner indicator on the back side of the block that can be measured to determine how much adjustment is remaining on the timing chain adjuster. A new chain can be "rolled in" without removing the engine. And a few people have even pulled the front engine cover to install a new tensioner and guides without pulling the engine. A couple other have pulled & reinstalled engines themselves to do major work "on the bench".
Since you describe yourself as a D-I-Y'er I suggest you obtain a copy of Saab's Workshop Information System for the 9-5. Someone posted a download link within the past two days where you can get this for free.
Having the SID rebuilt will cost you around $90. Three sources for this are often discussed on this board and there is a recent discussion thread on just this topic. Guy Senesac, Kramer MicroElectronics, and BBR are the names (I think) of the three most often used sources.
Is there any chance your display read "Service Theft Alarm"? If so, have someone with a Tech-II disable this display from your SID - after it is repaired of course - to avoid future messages and prevent middle of the night screamings of the alarm siren.
Enjoy your car! I have certainly enjoyed my 2000 model which I bought new.
