Roof racks or roof rails - since you guys are talking about a sedan rather than a wagon, I don't know if my gallery pictures here on TSN might help. I have a 2005 wagon with the roof racks, and a 1999 wagon with roof rails and cross racks from Thule.
Perhaps the gallery picture can assist. Note that the positions of the two roof rack mounting points are not the same as the roof rail connections, so obviously the load from something on the roof is distributed differently.
by the way, I work as a forensic engineer, often with (catastrophe) adjusters on a regular basis.
