...just got off the phone with the dealership, and while they haven;t broken the engine down yet, they are, to quote, "90% sure the engine is ruined, due to timing belt break".

For those that asked:

- car has been paid off for over 2 years, bought it CPO in late 2003.

- timing belt was last changed at 60K by dealer, I did NOT replace the tensioners at that time (fatal last words!)

- Like many SAAB enthusiasts, I am very attentive to my car, and I do as much maintenance as possible on my own. I had no out of the ordinary sounds/vibrations/whines/wiggles/anything to indicate impending failure of tensioner, and believe me, I listened for any tell-tale sign pretty much every day since 90K miles. (at this point, a failed tensioner is pure conjecture, I assume that will be the finding, but right now at this moment I don't have a conclusive diagnosis)

I have no idea what a replacement engine costs in my area, but I have to assume it is $4000-$5000 minimum. Not sure I have the heart in it to do the legwork of finding a reputable indy, towing it from the dealer to there, finding an engine, having to rent a car while all the work gets done, and then be out thousands so I can continue on with my 10 year old car. It's a personal decision in the end, and I don't think the stress is worth it for me. Probably going to part it out on my own, and then donate what is left to charity - barring some exceptional offer from the dealer for another SAAB tomorrow.

I will likely take the advice to rent a car for a week or two so I can shop for a new vehicle at a more controlled pace and less stressed mindset.

It's both sad and funny that what perhaps bugs me the most about the last 24 hours? That I filled the gas tank up 40 miles before it died. I want my $70 worth of gas back!
