Unlike a standard shift, you have more limited control over a/t shifting. With the newer cars, with paddles, you have more control, but not complete control. It's also more problematic (both physically and in terms of wear and tear) to coast in neutral (West Virginia Overdrive).
With the 4 speed transmission used up through 2001, all you can do is be very gentle on the accelerator pedal and don't use the "S" button. But you do need to keep the speed up high enough so that the car locks up the torque converter. This may result in conditions where a higher average speed actually gets better mileage than a lower one, if it allows full lockup operation over the complete driving cycle. With the later cars, there is a "slipping torque converter clutch" option, which is harder to avoid than the "unclutched" condition of earlier cars.
