Starting in 2004, the PCV was improved (and an improved retrofit is available for earlier models), but the real source of the problem is inadequate oil changes. This engine needs first rate oil changed on approximatel 5000 mile intervals. 10,000 mile intervals and cheapest possible oil means the engine is sludged, no matter what year. IMO.
In order of difficulty (and certainty):
You can use a bit of wire and scrape away at the bottom of the oil pan after you drain the oil and check for sludge.
You can remove the valve cover and peek down the inside of the timing cover.
You can remove the oil pan and check the screen of the oil pickup tube.
You can install Bob Bright's trick oil pan, the kind with a removeable cover under the pickup tube, which enables you to clean out any sludge that collects there each and every oil change.
Finally, if you are looking at a/t, I would strongly recommend looking up a year at 2002 models. The 5 speed a/t is smoother and allows full engine torque. The earlier models restrict the torque level. If you are looking at a manual transmission, I would slightly recommend looking up a year as well, for the improved seating, stability control, and the option for better lighting.
