On two occassions over the years....... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Rear wheel frozen to hub, Mike C, Tue, 24 Jun 2008 14:13:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've dealt with this twice over the years. Now, I use lubricant called Anti-Seize Thread Lubricant on the hub and wheel mating surfaces.
To solve the wheel-froze-on-hub dilemma I use a 4"X4"X2’ piece of wood and a sledge hammer. Jack up the car so that the rear wheel is just clear of the ground, place the 4X4 parallel to the inside of the wheel on the ground. Whack firmly (don't go wild, it's preferable that you don't bend the wheel rim). After each whack rotate the wheel 1/4 turn. After you see a little movement ease up with the sledge hammer….and keep rotating the wheel after each whack.
This method worked just fine for me. The only caution, and I repeat, don't go crazy with the sledge hammer.
After you get the wheel off, clean up the mating surfaces with a wire brush/emery cloth and apply a film of anti-seize lubricant. A “film”, not a fat bead.
