siphoning gas from tank

I'm trying to get back some of the 16 gallons of high test gas back from the tank that I pumped in just before the timing belt snapped on my '99 V6.
I bought a cheap tube-and-bulb siphon, but it seems not to work via the gas tank tube. Is there some sort of check ball down there that makes siphoning a non-starter?
Anyone know any other means of getting gas out of the tank for a do-it-yourselfer? I know about the access hole to the fuel pump under the rear seat, but getting that big retainer ring out looks imposing.
