an issue GM will have to deal with for a while. They've ignored this for 20 years and it is not going to be pretty.
IMHO, Chevy, GMC and Cadillac are their strong brands. GMC (trucks) is taking a hit just now, but light to medium trucks aren't going away so they'll keep that, along with Chevy and Caddy, the mainstream and upmarket marques.
The rest are all on the table to kill or sell. The ones with the most potential given the state of gas prices are Saturn and Saab, which are prime candidates for further platform-sharing, which can extend to Chevy.
It's nice to think that Saab could be acquired by a company that will bring the uniqueness back to the marque, but I think that's a fantasy. To most consumers, being unique is NOT a virtue. To survive, Saab has to be marketed based on its attributes and benefits, not the lame "Born from Jets" campaign, and have dealers who really support the brand. GM could get a great lift from Saab these days--performance, comfort, safety, practicality, and fuel economy in one package--but they don't seem inclined to take advantage of those strengths.
