When the DIC fails you get unburned fuel in the converter.
The unburned fuel can melt the internals of the converter as it ignites from the temperature the converter is running at.
Your OBD2 system periodically does a self diagnostic check of your emmisions system and will see that the upstream a downstream oxygen sensors are reading the same if the converter is not working.
That is what causes the Check engine light to come on.
If you get the OBD2 code read it will indicate a bad downstream sensor reading. Changing the sensor will not fix it, changing the converter will.
As pointed out in another message the converter has an 80,000 mile warranty. Saab replaced the one on my 9-3 at 61,000 on warranty.
