Long story. I was driving home in my 2004 Aero wagon (54,700 miles on the odometer) when, about a block from home, I get the ding and the SID message "coolant level low". I suspected immediately the cause was the by-pass valve failure. Why? The exact same problem had occured on my wife's 2003 Aero sedan (68,000 miles) the end of May. Luckily she was on her way home and close by. I had her car towed to the dealer (covered - thank you AAA) to fix and they charged us $400 ($95 part + labor).
So, when it happened to my car a little over a month later I was determined to fix it myself. Of course the part failed the Thursday before the 4th of July holiday. I ordered the part online from eeuroparts.com in the afternoon and they were able to get the part shipped via Fedex that day. Bravo for eeuroparts! Due to the holiday and weekend, I did't receive the part until Wednesday but the cost was cheaper than what the dealer charged on my wife's car.
I'm not a mechanic but, with the help of this board and other online picture instructions, I removed the old part in under an hour and installed the new valve in about 30 minutes. I don't know where the dealer gets $300 in labor for that job but it is excessive. Also, with so many failures I wish GM would reengineer a better replacement part.
Thanks to this BB and eeuroparts for saving me some money. What will fail next and what parts should I keep on hand? I have already replaced the DIC/IDM in both cars. I am considering ordering a CPS for possible future failures.
