There are two refrigerant ports. One is behind the passenger side headlight, the other is right beside the *driver's side* headlight.
That second port behind the passenger's headlight has (or had) an instruction on it saying "Evaporator service - use 1 psi regulated supply". I don't thing that's for charging.
The best thing you can have is a proper set of gauges, which I convinced a friend to buy last year for $40 at "Harbor Freight". There is a low pressure gauge, a high pressure gauge, and a hose that goes to the freon source. you can't screw it up b/c the two ports are different size. And these ports use a "quick release" type fitting, except you crank down on a knob after clicking the gauge in place to release the valve on the (car side) fitting.
The one by the left headlight is the high pressure, the one behind the right headlight is low pressure. You need to monitor the high pressure side, unless you are evacuating the system first and then inserting a meaured volume. The compressor is designed to hold a constant low-side pressure. It does this by varying the piston stroke - if the pressure rises, the stroke increases to draw down more on the evaporator. If the pressur egets too low, the stroke decreases to decrease the amount of suction. Very clever.
HTH. Good luck.
