is to inspect the engine using a borescope after letting it sit overnight. This was the recommended technique for distinguishing between valve stem leakage and turbo seal failure when the symptom was a puff of oil smoke in the morning.
Admittedly, most folks don't have a bore scope in their basement, and I doubt that most shops do either. Perhaps a tiny little "spy camera?"
