I've only ever had it engage once in earnest - I was cut off by an idiot who decided at the very last possible second to take the exit I was already on (we were well past the painted exit area; he just barely missed the guardrail!) in snowy slippery weather. It was a two lane exit (one to go left, one right) and I knew the right lane was clear, so I was able to dodge him. It was like a giant hand holding the back end of the car in place. I've since engaged it for "fun" in the snow. Stability control is one of those things that you might never need in your life, but when you do, it can possibly save your butt. I don't think it's been particularly troublesome, and it's pretty well self-diagnosing. If it finds a fault, it just goes to sleep (and lights up the dashboard).
Sticking with the manual transmission eliminates one big reason for the newer model - the 5 speed a/t.
