Monte:
It is not possible to install a VDO sensor in the area where the oil pressure switch is located adjacent to the starter. There is not enough room. As you surmised, I used a short piece of hose with fittings and a junction block to accomplished this. I have attached the picture below which only shows the top end of the hose and the junction block. The lower end of the hose connects to the opening formerly occupied by the oil pressure switch through an Aeroquip connector that screws into the block and a 45 degree fitting to which the hose is fitted.
If you use an approach similar to mine, be sure to run a ground wire to the sensor body or junction block it's screwed into or the sensor won't work.
If you bought a VDO gauge with a red low-pressure warning light and a sensor with a switch built in you can wire up the sensor switch to operate both the gauge warning light and the original oil pressure warning light.
Send me an email and I'll forward you the notes that detail the specifics regarding the hose, the fittings you'll need, the junction block and a source for these items.
