A few days ago my car started chugging while revving low going up a hill. It's a manual and had never done that before. Over the last few days, the chugging has become more and more frequent, even on flat road. It seems more likely to occur at lower rpms, like right after shifting.

I decided to pop the hood and rev the engine while parked to see if I could recreate it, and as soon as I turned on my car I heard a loud clicking sound coming from the engine (or right in that vicinity). It seems to be a real metal on metal sound. I revved the engine and the frequency of the clicking didn't seem to be directly related to increased rpms. Any ideas on what may be going on and if the two issues may be related? Whatever it is, it doesn't sound good.
