- the extra air sucked through that hose will cause a lean condition.
- a lean condition will eventually kill an engine
I assume your rebuilder came to his conclusion when he looked a burned piston, probably with a hole in it?
running lean has other tell-tale signs before it kills the engine. An engine with a large air leak will generally surge, be hard to start, and/or occasionally stall. Was the car running poorly before its demise? if so for how long? how long was the CEL on?
