my experience of replacing turbo at 60K, under 7year/70K California emission warranty, longish
take away notice, California emission warranty covers turbo, not only to Saabs, so keep your oil change receipt before 7year/70K. and the federal emission warranty covers Catalytic converter till 80K.
right after I bought the 2002 95 Arc wagon at 60.5K, I started to notice blue puffs from the exhaust during cold starts. Once every 2 or 3 starts, I got blue smokes. Since this is my 3rd saab, I knew it was turbo. so I called the saab dealer at walnut creek, CA, where the car has been serviced by the previous owner, to find out if any warranty will cover the turbo. To my surprise, they told me that it is covered by the California emission warranty if I show them some oil change records and do the oil change between 60-63K. They have the rest of oil change records. Of course they need to see the blue smoke.
Now the drama began, since the walnut creek dealer is 40 miles from my home, I called the dealer at Dublin CA, which is pretty close to me. They told me that California emission warranty won't cover it for my model year. Being confused, I called Saab USA. The rep told me that it should cover it but he was not sure since he can't access my file using VIN. so the 2nd day a rep from case management department called me and told me that it is not covered. What? I told him that the warranty book says that it was covered. He said he will do research. the next day, he called me to ask me to go a dealer for a diagnosis, which I won't do before having a straight answer for the warranty. but he can't give me a straight answer. the days following, he just kept calling me everyday asking me to take the car to a dealer without giving me a straight answer. When I politely push for it, he started to yell at me.
so I decided to end the drama by taking the car to Walnut Creek. They were able to see the blue smoke in 2 days after the car was dropped off. and it took them 3 days to replace the turbo, free oil change and coolant flush.
days later, saab usa called me for a survey and heard my story. today, a lady from saab usa called me to apologize.
