A sudden loss of drive, with no catastrophic noises or pre-emptive symptoms, "may" be as simple as a failed electrical solenoid in the tranny. The new automatic transmissions use electrical soleniods controlled by the computer to direct hydraulic oil pressure to the clutch packs and bands.
The trany does not even need to be removed from the car to replace any of the 3 or 4 solenoids attached to the valve body.
Find an automatic transmission expert, this repair might be relatively cheap.
