level sensor (headlights) detail of construction

Going to my fave Saab mechanic (not a Saab dealer) my car was on the lift for an oil change, and looking at details of construction, underneath, I came through a detail: a small sensor in a box, located near the rear suspension, near fuel tank. I asked "what is this"? for headlights he said..
Gee, this thing is supposed to detect the angle of the car body (going up hill, down hill..) and adjust the level of the headlights.. keep them horisontal or so.. (is this the way it works?)
But what puzzled me was to find such a fragile item, linked with wires, attached in a place that's exposed to rain, ice, slush.. is it a problematic item (should be, I think) or time proved it works properly??
