...that certainly changes things. Depending on how much your deposit is, it might be worth considering abandoning it, if the car and/or seller give you the creeps for any reason.

By "decent miles" I mean something comparable to the car you're describing. Saabs can go forever, but if someone's asking $5500 for one with 200k on the clock, that's too much. 90K? Not too bad.

The overall rule of thumb is never buy a car you haven't driven in person. But, if you've made the deposit, I'd say make certain there are records, make sure you hear the car run and there are no funny noises, and if possible drive the thing. If it spooks you when driving, walk away, deposit notwithstanding. If not, then you're probably doing okay, but steel yourself for the possibility you'll need to invest $1000 or so in having a good mechanic go over the car and address anything needed.

2.3s are always candidates for the dreaded sludge problem, but that doesn't mean they're guaranteed to have it. Hope it all works out swimmingly for you in the end!
