How do you get to the coolant by-pass valve? 99 4cyl

My 99 4 cyl wagon has developed quite a coolant leak which appears to be coming from the area where the heater hoses pass through the firewall.
I find WIS and my Haynes manual to be no help at all with this one (maybe I need a lesson on how to use WIS).
The coolant system diagram on eeuroparts seems to reveal the most of anything I've found so far. (http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/DiagramPopUp.html?http://data.eeuroparts.com/Images/diagrams/lg_c818ba84-6d61-4e5f-90ec-a6279fd466ec.gif)It looks like there is a coolant by-pass valve at the place where I am seeing the leak, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get at it without major disassembly. But if I take enough stuff apart to get to it where I can see it good - I won't be able to run the engine and actaully see exactly where the leak is.
Have I interpreted the diagram correctly? Is this valve on the engine side of the firewall? Does this valve leak if it fails or do I just have a hose leak? Has anyone else had a leak at this location?
Any help (even moral support is needed due to numerous problems with this vehicle)would be appreciated.
Thanks, Calvin
