This is my opinion.
Since when they started to make it so difficult to replace the voltage regulator alone and after have tried it a couple of times with bad result, I always only install Bosch rebuilt or factory new alternators.
It seems that on these new alternators it is not the brushes wearing down anymore but diodes going bad which is not part of the voltage regulator.
Back in the old days with the 900/9000 where you could replace the regulator quite easily, it was a quick and easy test but with the NG900 and up, it isn't worth the hassle and not that fault anymore.
