Just as you, I recommend (and demand if the car is at my shop) that it is not driven.
Technically, it is possible to drive the car but if you hit someone with a big wallet and a good lawyer, it is a lot of explanation to do why a factory installed safety device that most likely would have prevented this accident was removed from the car.
As far as rebuilders go, I don't recommend anyone anymore but caution all customers that it is an inexpensive test to see if we can save money instead of installing a new one.
I used to send them to Autoecu but then finally got a dud from them and at the same time, a friend of mine send in one too after I vouched for them and his was a dud. It was difficult to get them to fix it and not until almost a year later when I had another one to send in to them did they agree to do the repair for free.
But then again, I sent a BMW X5 ABS to BBA and that one came back a dud too so it seems that it is not easy to rebuild these newer type modules compared to the older style in Volvo and VW for example.
