1999 9-5 I4 120K miles. Had to replace worn timing chain last spring, removed oil pan and found maybe 20% of screen clogged with small particles, a few bits and pieces in the pan but not much of anything.
So the car uses about a quart of oil between changes, syn performed at 6k intervals. So I'm 5k into the last oil change and I heard a low tick tick under the valve cover. Checked the oil level and it registered low - at the top end of the bulb on the dipstick. Added enough to bring it full level - and ticking immediately stopped. Last fall I had returned from a long trip and checking the oil found it down about the same level - no ticking but several thousand miles later my timing chain was toast.
The question I have - does it sound like I might have a worn oil pump. I've not measured the pressure but the oil pressure light never flickers and goes off immediatedly upon starting. The other thing to mention is that when the lifter was ticking advancing the throttle a bit made it stop.
Time to measure the oil pressure ? I read the Chuck Andrews articles and found one about a well maintained engine that indeed had no sludging - but the timing chain stretched and ultimately the problem was found to be a worn oil pump.
thanks
